Banned from YouTube
So pretty much - I woke up to this:

I didn’t really use my YouTube account all that much.
I had around 3 videos. Of those, only one will be missed. It wasn’t all that great, but let’s just say it served as a memory of a greater time.
Also, the ability to view “mature” videos (i.e: some episodes of “Is it a good idea to microwave this?”) will be missed… as well as the ability to comment on videos.
Really though, I never got into the whole video-blogger culture of YouTube. I’m just not interested on plastering a video of my face up on the world wide web every week!
I could just recreate an account - but I think I’ll fight for justice!
Yes, justice, I was wrongfully banned!
I (presumably) was banned for propagating a script that would spam YouTube with “unsubscribe” events fired off from client-side JavaScript.
This drops the “Subscribers” count on the affected user’s homepage.
I chose to drop a few thousand subscribers from the infamous “Fred” (“HEEEEEYYYY ITS FREEEEDDDD!”)
So - I don’t think I did anything wrong. Here’s why:
- Fred deserved it. We all need a reality check once in a while. I think internet celebrities tend to forget that there are people out there who don’t like what they’re doing! Our ego’s all get a bit bloated some times. Really, we could all use a reality check from time to time.
- … COME ON. IT WAS FRED!
- The damage was completely superficial. All subscribers are still actually there, YouTube simply had to rebuild the subscriber count using referential data.
- I think this once again teaches us the dangers of client-side scripting logic. I fucking hate JavaScript! Yes it’s very useful, and it can do some damn awesome shit - but there are so many pitfalls. Such as, you know, making it appear that Fred lost 1 million+ subscribers.
- The “damage” was corrected without YouTube even entering maintenance mode. This should be evidence enough that there was no real damage being done here.
- Allow me to reiterate. It. Was. Fred.
- Free speech, I have rights, I’m a decent human being when you get to know me, blah blah blah.
I’m not gonna go in guns blazing, and admit to this outright. Because, for all I know, they might have banned me for some inane comment on a video!
But I think I’ll try and get my YouTube account back. Just for the lulz of it.
I’ll admit, I expected better from Google… they closed my account with no prior warning, and no letter has followed! I understand that sometimes they’re legally obliged to close an account, and they just don’t have time to say: “We’re closing your account in _x_ days. Sorry about that. You can appeal it here.” — but they should at least e-mail me and say: “Hey. Yeah. We closed your account. Sorry about that. You can appeal it here.” instead of logging me out of the service, and then informing me I was banned next time I log in!
What next, Google? Are you going to lock me out of my e-mail account?
